What is the Stroop Effect?
The Stroop effect is a classic psychology phenomenon: when the ink color of a word conflicts with the word's meaning, it takes longer to identify the ink color. For example, the word "RED" written in blue takes longer to identify as blue because your brain automatically reads "RED" first.
What does this test measure?
The Stroop test measures selective attention, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed. It's used in clinical psychology to evaluate executive function. High scores require suppressing the automatic reading response — a task that taxes the prefrontal cortex.
